July Blog Circle | Black + White

As much as I love these photos, I love them even more in color (see what I mean?). But! Black and white was this month's blog circle theme, so black and white will do.

A million years ago, before Lily was born, I wrote this essay for The Curator about wanting to teach my kiddos to love reading. So far, success! We have read so much Beverly Cleary, it makes my head spin. But both of my kids love it, and that makes my mama heart happy. (I've already managed to knock out 29 books this year! How? I don't know!!!)

And, while we are on the topic of reading, I used to have this print hanging on my refrigerator. It's a free printable, and I'm thinking I need a fresh copy to hang somewhere I (and my kids!) can see it every day. Isn't it cute?

June Blog Circle | Water

Water. It seems like the perfect theme for the beginning of summer, and I see quite a bit of it in my future. This weekend was spent with family on Lake Ontario. There was boating and swimming and sunsets and drinks. We used lots of sunscreen and stayed up late. I dropped my keys (with the only key to my car, ahem) in the marina and we miraculously fished them out with a magnet. And my husband and I went out to celebrate our anniversary without our kiddos. It was kinda perfect.

So, let's start with some water photo! Sound good?

And, because the weekend was comprised of more than just staring at the lake, how about a few more?

May Blog Circle | Shallow Depth of Field at Corbett's Glen

I'm not gonna lie. The day I walked around Corbett's Glen was awesome! But here's the dirty little secret of it: I've spent the majority of my life in Rochester and somehow have never been there before. What? How is that even possible?! I really don't know. So, when I found myself with a free morning to explore the glen (alone!), I happily took advantage. 

It worked out perfectly for this month's blog circle theme: shallow depth of field. This is one of my favorite things. It creates one sliver of focus and the rest gets that blurry, out-of-focus look. And here's another secret: The closer the camera is to the subject, the blurrier the background gets. Pretty cool, huh?

So, in keeping with that theme, all of these photographs are shot "wide open" (another photography term for shallow depth of focus). Happy end of May to you!

March Blog Circle | Green

For this month's blog circle, I (yes, me!) came up with the brilliant prompt: GREEN. Why, green? Well, because I'm so very desperate for it and I thought maybe I could urge spring along through the mere power of suggestion. No such luck. Instead of green, we have brown. Instead of new growth, we got a foot and a half of snow. Spring, where are you?!

Despite all this, I was determined to find green outside, which sent me on a scavenger hunt around the city that turned out to be pretty fun. (Side note: I could have photographed the eleventy billion things in my home that are green, but that felt like cheating. And if you've seen any photos of my home or wardrobe, you know that seventy-five percent of it is green.) 

So, without further fanfare, here's what I found! 

And because March is also self-portrait month around these parts, this happened.

February Blog Circle | Love

When I was trying to think of goals for the new year, I knew I wanted to stretch as a photographer. I mean really stretch. Like out of my comfort zone. At first, I thought I'd participate in a 52 week project, but I realized pretty quickly that wasn't a good fit. Then I saw an open invitation to join a blog circle that would have a monthly theme. The thing is, I didn't have a blog. All I had was my tumblr, so you can see January's post here.

But, as you know, I'm blogging again, which means I'm all in with my blog circle! This month's theme was love. I had lots of ideas but little by way of executing them, so I used what I love that's readily at hand: my daughter (who has been shockingly cooperative about getting her photo taken lately, which I love).

So, here's to love!
